LEORA LEWIS

“Certain objects in my house, found, collected, bought or given move around the house in endless migrations. A wooden rabbit gets to sit beside an abandoned lightshade, a ceramic robin props a washing glove, a jetsam and flotsam nestles together as if on eclectic altars.

One piece gets moved, another gets balanced on top of another. I like to think of these assemblages as chess arrangements, rearranging themselves, moving around creating visual games and tensions. Perfect for still-life juxtapositions.”

Leora received a Diploma in Etching and Photography from Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT in 1976. She completed her BA Honours at the Central School of Art and Design in London in 1983, where she discovered all the potentials of clay .

Lewis is known for her beautiful ceramic pieces of various animals and animal heads. These subtle hand-worked pieces are constructed from clay slabs impressed with both organic and industrial textures, and are drawn from her own personal forms and imagery.
